Met Office - Phase Two

The Meteorological Office, commonly known as the Met Office, is the United Kingdom’s national weather service, headquartered in Exeter. The £80 million building houses 1,000 staff and was designed for high performance and environmental sustainability.

Thorlux has a long-standing professional relationship with the Met Office and has been upgrading the lighting throughout the building to improve energy efficiency, luminaire longevity, and sustainability.

Thorlux Lighting has specified and supplied a SmartScan-controlled lighting system in the Met Office restaurant area. Thorlux Cloud suspended luminaires, coupled with edge-lit Flexview ‘skylight’ recessed picture luminaires, provide an inspirational, light-hearted connection to the Met Office’s weather-forecasting duties. The Cloud luminaires’ ColourActive technology provides automated colour temperature control, configured via the SmartScan website, with preset modes that mimic natural daylight patterns or can be customised as needed. The luminaires connect wirelessly to a ColourActive Gateway, which updates them every few minutes to ensure smooth and consistent lighting transitions during the day. The restaurant lighting scheme also features linear Flexline luminaires and G3 recessed downlighters.

Within the office spaces, Thorlux luminaires provide functional work lighting, complemented by the continued aesthetic use of Cloud luminaires. These luminaires also feature ColourActive technology, which automatically adjusts colour temperature throughout the day. Lexi illuminated exit signs are mounted throughout the area to ensure safety compliance.

The colour shifts can be pre-programmed or manually adjusted as required. All luminaires are linked wirelessly via the SmartScan lighting management system, providing site managers with a wealth of practical operational information.
