Cleanliness is an essential discipline in school kitchens, so luminaires should be sealed to prevent ingress of dust and insects, and should be easy to clean. They need to be suitable for the high ambient temperatures often found over cooking appliances such as hobs and ovens, and be sealed to cope with steam and condensation.

In Home Economics teaching spaces, conditions are less arduous, so suspended Thorlux Light Line or Zipline have been used successfully. Both offer good vertical illumination and modelling, so are ideal.

Surface & Suspended Solution

The A-Line is ideal for kitchens, because there are no external clips to hold the cover, making it easy to clean. It is also sealed to IP66, and versions are available that are suitable for ambient temperatures up to 50 °C.

Recessed Solution

If a recessed luminaire is needed, Cleanline is sealed to IP65 below the ceiling and is suitable for a variety of ceiling types including plasterboard. Hi-Style or Radiance can be used in areas where a lower IP rating is acceptable.

Emergency Lighting

BS 5266-1 recommends an emergency lighting level of 15 lux on the work surfaces and on switches and cut-outs. A Risk Assessment is needed to determine where the increased illumination level is needed.
